Safety protocols go wireless

In the past, safety functions in factory automation systems were hard-wired, but with the introduction of fieldbus technologies, safety signals started to be integrated into conventional fieldbus infrastructure. This allowed for more flexibility in the application of safety functions. As mobile machines became more common in factory automation, the need for safe data communication without wired networks arose. Wireless technologies, such as WLAN, have been improving to meet the requirements of safe communication, but the choice of transmission protocols is crucial.
