Integration of Daikin FDMRN AC ducted units into KNX using Intesis protocol converter gateways

Project overview

The Mamsha Seerah Residential Community is a large-scale premium residential development in Sharjah, comprising eight residential towers under the Suroor and Sawa clusters. The project required a fully integrated KNX-based home automation system for centralized and apartment-level control.

As part of the project requirements, each air conditioning (AC) unit had to be integrated into the KNX home automation system through a dedicated gateway, providing independent control functionality.

However, the selected Daikin DX units (FDMRN Series) were not directly compatible with KNX or any other open communication protocol. These units required an additional AC manufacturer-specific module that provides communication via Modbus.

Key Challenges:

  • Each AC unit required dedicated KNX integration.
  • The existing Daikin units supported only Modbus communication through Netpro Dual Module.
  • Budget constraints prevented upgrading to a KNX-compatible AC series.
  • The solution had to maintain full control functionalities.

With technical coordination and support from the Intesis technical team, BMTS successfully completed integration for the mock-up units, ensuring the solution met both performance and functional requirements.

Technical solution using Intesis

After evaluating multiple solutions from different manufacturers, BMTS selected the HMS Intesis INKNXMBM1000200 Modbus RTU Client to KNX TP protocol converter gateway.

This gateway enabled full integration of the Daikin DX units into the KNX-based home automation system while delivering all required control functionalities:

  • ON/OFF control
  • Temperature setpoint adjustment
  • Fan speed control
  • Auto mode selection

With technical coordination and support from the HMS technical team, BMTS successfully completed integration for the mock-up units, ensuring the solution met both performance and functional requirements.

During the initial phase, the integration process presented some technical challenges, particularly in configuration and communication mapping between Modbus and KNX objects.

Thanks to the proactive support of the Intesis technical team, these challenges were successfully addressed, enabling the completion of the mock-up integration. Following mock-up approval, full-scale implementation was initiated across all residential towers.

Based on the successful integration in this project, BMTS has recommended KNX AC gateway solutions for other developments from the same client.
