In our latest OPC UA article, Joakim Wiberg, Head of Technology at Anybus, explains the practical benefits and use cases of OPC UA within industrial automation.

What are the benefits of OPC UA in factories, warehouses, processing or manufacturing plants?

OPC UA brings numerous benefits to industrial companies, ensuring interoperability, real-time monitoring, secure data exchange, scalability, flexibility, diagnostics, and historical data access. It enhances efficiency, productivity, safety, and enables informed decision-making in factories, warehouses, processing, and manufacturing plants.

Does OPC UA also help companies to save money or increase profits? If so, how?

Yes, OPC UA helps companies save money and increase profits in lots of different ways. It streamlines communication and integration, reducing costs linked to proprietary interfaces. It enables companies to receive higher-quality data, empowering them to make data-driven decisions to optimize processes and implement predictive maintenance strategies. This utilization of reliable data facilitates improved efficiency, reduces downtime, and ultimately leads to cost savings and increased profitability.

Can you provide a couple of practical benefits and use cases for some key industries?

OPC UA offers practical benefits and use cases in various industries. In the automotive industry, it enables real-time monitoring of production processes, ensuring seamless integration of components and systems from different manufacturers. This helps companies to improve quality, optimize production, and use predictive maintenance to reduce downtime.

In the food and beverage industry, OPC UA ensures standardized communication between diverse equipment and systems, streamlining production workflows, enhancing traceability, and enabling compliance with regulatory requirements. This promotes food safety and quality control throughout the supply chain.

But these are just a couple of examples. OPC UA brings benefits to all industries.

What do you think will happen with OPC UA in the future?

Two main things.  Firstly, there will be an increasing demand from factories, warehouses, and plant owners for all products used on the shop floor to support OPC UA. This trend has already started and is expected to continue.

Secondly, the benefits of using OPC UA will expand. The OPC Foundation is finalizing the OPC UA Field eXchange (UA FX) specifications, which will enable companies to use OPC UA FX to control processes at the control and field levels. And emerging technologies like Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) and TSN will enhance real-time management and device synchronization, facilitating faster and more efficient integration of edge devices into their systems.

Any final thoughts before I let you go and enjoy the sunshine?

Just to reiterate the remarkable power and versatility of OPC UA for companies. With its ability to enhance efficiency, facilitate standardized integration, ensure secure data exchange, and provide future-proof adaptability, OPC UA stands as a game-changer in the world of industrial automation. So, embrace OPC UA, explore its potential, and make the most of this remarkable technology.

Enjoy your summer!
